I have been painting in various forms for the past 20 years and am primarily
self-taught. The first 12 years I spent in partnership with fellow artist
Jayne Allister and together we formed The Fabulous Floorcloth Company, a
boutique business producing one-of-a-kind handpainted floorcloths, furniture
and objets d¹art from our loft studio space overlooking the Lachine Canal in
Montréal.
After many successful years with The Fabulous Floorcloth Company, a shift to
painting on canvas was the natural progression, and with my decorative
background, the subject of interiors and still lifes was the perfect fit.
Five years ago my family and I made a lifestyle change, moving from the
urban bustle of Montréal to South Lancaster, a small hamlet on the St.
Lawrence River. The satisfying simplicity of country life inspired me to
paint on canvas in earnest, using the nooks and corners of our 180-year old
house as inspiration for vibrant still-life and interior artworks bursting
with vivid hues.
My painting studio is now a restored sunroom at the side of our home
overlooking the vast country yard- verdant and lush in the summer and
cool-white in the winter- a contrast to the warm interior scenes in my
paintings.
My collection of unusual antique objets, vases, pots, textiles, furniture,
lamps, and sculptures, now find their way into my work, some making more
than one guest appearance! The true star of the work, though, is rich and
fearless colour.
Fresh-picked flowers bursting out of their containers. An eclectic group of
wildly patterned Chinese vases. A lush table set with a rustic feast of
fruit, bread, and a glass of wine. A cozy corner inviting you for an
afternoon read. These are the scenes of simple joy from my life that now
find their way onto canvas.
